Terrariums for the Creative & Oddball
Terrariums are all the rage. Well, let’s kick it up a notch and do more than put some plants in a jar! We will work with material found at Creative Reuse Pittsburgh and the greenSinner vaults and greenhouse. A topiary made of buttons? Plants in a cigar box? Who knows what we’ll make!

Terrarium Class
We’re building terrariums at the Pittsburgh Public Market this Sunday. Come join us!
We’ll talk about considerations for choosing plants, accessorizing your terrarium, and successfully caring for it. Then we’ll turn you loose on a container of your choice to plant your very own terrarium.
The Quick Details
- Sunday, February 12, 11:00 am in the program area at the back right corner of the Pittsburgh Public Market. Plan on about an hour an a half.
- Bring a glass container (see below for more guidance).
- Please respond by email to jonathan@greensinner.com and let us know if you’re coming. (But if you’re not sure, don’t worry – come even if you didn’t respond.)
- Class costs $10, which includes soil, moss, rocks, etc. Plants are extra, starting at $3. (One or two plants are plenty for smaller containers, maybe 3-5 for large containers.) Most folks end up spending about $15-20.
Bring Your Own Container
You’ll need to bring a container along to design your terrarium in (or more than one, if you like). A few important considerations:
- Your plants need light, so your container should be clear.
- A lid is optional. Any reasonably enclosed container will work for the style of terrariums we’re building.
- Make sure your hand fits into the opening of the container. (It’s possible to create a smaller terrarium, but more difficult.)
Good options for containers include mason jars, aquariums, fishbowls, and apothecary jars. If you’re not sure, send us an email!
